Marathon Winners!

The annual Landsailing Kapiti Waikanae Beach 50km Endurance race was a great success yesterday. The marathon event was run in almost perfect conditions with a clean beach and 20-30km NW wind. The winners completing the 50km in 1 hour and 10 minutes.

See the results on MYLAPS Speedhive site https://speedhive.mylaps.com/Events/1496293 checkout the Lap Chart to see all the jostling (in a gentlemanly way of course) for position, especially in the first few laps.  Congratulations to everyone who took part, especially Trevor for taking Gold and the Event Trophy, John for taking Silver and Ernie for taking Bronze medal.

A good sail at Waikanae Beach on Saturday

When I arrived on the beach at 1445, I was greeted with 16-20km NW and plenty of beach to sail. I started with a 5.5m sail, but soon changed down to a 4m as it was a bit tough on my sheet arm and Ian and Keith were leaving me for dead. There was a spot of rain for about 15 minutes, but otherwise a near perfect afternoon, with 20-25km NW wind.  The 3m tide gave us a huge beach, not that we needed it as the wind was near square-on to the beach, so no tacking involved. As Murphy’s Law would have it, we could have easily pulled off a 50km marathon with these conditions. Maybe we should not rule out 1800 low tides for future calendar planning…

Manawatu Open a success

Manawatu Blokart Club Open event at Ohakea

The Manawatu Blokart Club ran a successful Open Blokart event at Ohakea this Waitangi weekend. Seven rounds sailed on Saturday in a Southerly around 10 – 15 knots. Some sailors were swapping between 4m and 5.5m sails trying to get the optimum combination. Sunday saw light winds with just 3 rounds being completed. 10 rounds altogether, so everyone was able to drop their worst race. Congratulations to all the winners. A special mention to Nicko who was on form winning every race except for two. Dropping a 2nd must be tough!

We finally pulled it off!

We finally pulled it off! The Landsailing Kapiti Waikanae Beach 50km Endurance, that is.

We arrived around 1100 to a receding tide and a reasonably clean beach.

A strong contingent had arrived to compete for the coveted Landsailing Kapiti Trophy. The wind was North and down the beach a bit and this meant there was going to be a fare bit of tacking involved and any Trophy adversaries had their work cut out for them.

Right from the start we could see this was going to be quite a marathon. The first lap took 16 minutes (for the leader) and the times were increasing with each lap. The Minimum distance for a lap is 3.86km. Most would have been doing over 4km with the tacking. The last lap took over 23 minutes!

While the goal was to cover 50km or 3 hours (whichever came first), we shortened it to 2 hours because of the dropping wind and incoming tide.

Congratulations to everyone who took part. Especially to Robert Deighton for taking the trophy!

Gold Robert Deighton

Silver Bruce Buckland

Bronze Ernie Watts
